On the occasion of his sensational retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Italian provocateur Maurizio Cattelan announced that he was retiring from art. In fact, his new career had already begun in 2010 with Toilet Paper, a magazine-cum-artist's book containing no text, only full spreads of color photographs that appropriate the slick production values of commercial photography to deliver dreamlike (or nightmarish) images. This deluxe volume gathers all of the images published in the first five issues, re-edited by Dennis Freedman in collaboration with Cattelan; it also includes a significant portion of previously unpublished images. The photographs vary in style and reference, from nineteenth-century crime scene to French New Wave film still; from optical illusions and games to word play. Among its more notorious images are a man dressed as a nun shooting up in a tawdry bedroom and a dirty ear floating in a bowl of yellow soup.

White Columns is pleased to announce ‘Design Office with Kim Gordon – Since 1980’, the first survey exhibition of Kim Gordon’s ongoing art practice.
Kim Gordon studied at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles in the late 1970s and has continued to work as an artist since then. Her first solo exhibition, presented under the name ‘Design Office’ took place at White Columns in 1981. The current exhibition will include photographs, writings, videos, paintings and sculptures produced by Gordon between 1980 and 2013.
Kim Gordon’s art has been shown internationally including recent solo exhibitions at KS Art, New York; and Reena Spaulings Fine Art, New York, among others. Her collected writings - which originally appeared in Artforum, ZG and Real Life magazines – are forthcoming from the Sternberg Press. A widely recorded musician Kim Gordon is a founding member of Sonic Youth and performs as Body/Head (with Bill Nace.)
A new limited-edition vinyl solo recording by Kim Gordon will accompany the exhibition, and a publication anthologizing Gordon’s activities as an artist will follow in the fall.

El Anatsui Broken Bridge II Through September 30 The artist’s largest outdoor work to date, Broken Bridge II consists of recycled pressed tin and mirrors, which hangs on an outdoor wall adjacent to the park. HIGH LINE BILLBOARD is a series of art installations presented on the giant billboard next to the High Line at 10th Avenue at West 18th Street. Adrian Paci Selected Works Through October 9 High Line Channel 14 A series of videos including The Encounter (2011), PilgrIMAGE (2005), and Turn On (2004). Solar Featuring Rosa Barba, Neïl Beloufa, Camille Henrot, and Basim Magdy October 10–December 4 High Line Channel 14 Recent video works that explore the spectacle of nature. Presented as part of Marfa Dialogues/NY, an examination of climate change science, environmental activism, and artistic practice taking place in October and November 2013 in New York City. Given that 2011 was the year of protesting and dreaming dangerously, 2013 prompts us to think responsively and come up with useful ideas and suggestions. At a time when the financial crisis in Greece and elsewhere is reaching a highpoint, the 4th Athens Biennale (AB4) cannot but respond to this bleak situation through a pertinent question: Now what? While Monodrome (AB3) attempted to reflect upon Modern Greek history and the origins of the crisis, this year the Biennale will set out to explore creative alternatives to a state of bankruptcy.
Pondering this turning point, AB4 puts into play the collaborative process in producing an exhibition. Titled AGORA, it reflects on the way a biennale has to operate under the current socio-economic circumstances. Using the empty building of the former Athens Stock Exchange as its main venue, AB4 proposes AGORA not only as a place of exchange and interaction, but also as an ideal setting for critique. Contrary to an idealized image of the ancient agora, this new AGORA points to a radical re-orientation in thinking – one that entails judgment, ruptures and conflict. As a contested space where multiple theses and doctrines emerge, this AGORA cannot be taken for granted: it aims for pleasure and purpose; it opts for the carnivalesque and the ambiguous, for the significant as much as the insignificant.
AGORA draws on the notions of the assembly and the assemblage. Conceived both as a living organism and an exquisite corpse, it is formulated through a succession of objects, collaborative events, performances, roundtable discussions, film screenings, workshops and educational programs. In AGORA works and theses evoke that which is urgently needed at this particular moment: an engaged subjectivity, an unearthing of timely attitudes, a reevaluation of artistic strategies, a deconstruction of mystifying narratives.
AB4 will be realized by a nameless and ephemeral group of artists, curators, theorists and practitioners in the creative industries. AGORA is thus a collective experiment, the result of a process of fermentation between professionals from different backgrounds. What matters most to those who participate in such an experiment is a shared sense of responsibility and an urge to co-produce meaning.

Paul Goodman (September 9, 1911 - August 2, 1972)
Paul Goodman (September 9, 1911 – August 2, 1972) was a novelist,
playwright, poet and psychotherapist, although now best known as a
social critic, anarchist philosopher, and public intellectual. Though
often thought of as a sociologist, he vehemently denied being one in a
presentation in the Experimental College at San Francisco State in 1964,
and in fact said he could not read sociology because it was too often
lifeless. The author of dozens of books including Growing Up Absurd and The Community of Scholars, Goodman was an activist on the pacifist
Left in the 1960s and a frequently cited inspiration to the student
movement of that decade. A lay therapist for a number of years, he was a
co-founder of Gestalt Therapy in the 1940s and '50s.
